LAKE OF THE OZARKS — It took more than 650 man hours, 300 gallons of gas and dozens of volunteers to pull it off and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has extended its thanks.
For its commitment to the environment, the Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance was recently honored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for the completion of a successful 2007 water sampling program.
LOWA executive director Donna Swall said the all-volunteer group collected more than 350 samples as part of a program implemented to monitor trends in E. coli levels last summer. In its first year, the program went off without a hitch, which is likely what caused DNR to take notice, she said.
Swall said it was no small task. Volunteers and DNR worked together to coordinate testing sites and drop off locations. DNR went to great lengths to train volunteers to prepare them before they headed out on the water, she said.
